What Would You Do???

Inspiration - "What Would U Do?" - Dogg Pound - "Now what would you do?/If you could f*ck with me and my crew/But you can't so don't even think about/steppin in the motherf*ckin house"

What I’m Listening To – “Young, Rich and Dangerous” - Kriss Kross

Question(s) I Asked Myself Today - Why do I have a Kriss Kross CD? And why am I listening to it now?

Work is crazy. I vented about a couple of issues last week, but finally there is a light at the end of the tunnel. My new direct manager finally started on Monday, so eventually things will be getting back to normal. Until I acclimate her to the inner workings of my department though, I'm still involved in every little thing. I've been busy, so busy that I didn't even have time to read blogs or write as much as I wanted to. This week has been all about work. So, todays post is going to be about a situation that came up at work this week.

I was reviewing the budget with my manager when we noticed that one of our employees wasn't being paid correctly. Today's paycheck was double what it should be. After some investigation, I figured out what the problem was. This guy used to be a part time employee working 20 hours a week. When he got promoted to my department, he went full time (40 hours a week) and started getting a full time salary. The colleague I went off on last week didn't change the employee's hours in the system so payroll paid him double. My manager and I reviewed it and this has been going on for three straight paychecks. This employee has gotten over $3500 that he didn't deserve and didn't say anything about it. I know that my colleague made a HUGE mistake, but I didn't snitch on him. As far as my manager knows, it was the payroll department's mistake. We are in the process of getting the money back, but that made me think. What would I do if I was being overpaid? Would I just keep the loot or would I tell someone about it? I know everyone says honesty is the best policy, but it would be hard to turn down free money. I probably would say something just because I know that it would catch up with me eventually. What would you do in a situation like this and why? Also would you have snitched on the annoying colleague, knowing that it could have cost him his job?

It was written...

Chances are I would have not said a damn thing about the money, and would have dry sntched on him so fast just for the simple fact that he didnt seem to have any loyalty to you in your earlier post. I think he would have got you blasted, but Kudos for taking the high road

That's a toughy, T. You never know a person's motivation to say or not say the truth. I admire the way you handled it though.

i would tell someone about the money, but not solely cuz i think dishonesty like that comes back in different manifestations to wreak havoc upon a person's life (mouthful, huh? LOL), but i would have been thinking about how i might suffer if someone at the job found out. i'd be seen as being dishonest, someone not to be trusted, which is a bad look for the token negro. they already looking for a reason, so i can't give 'em any.

I think I would have said something about the money, it would catch up later and it would be difficult to catch up with a good enough reason for not telling. As far as that annoying co-worker...I might have snitched, your a bad man.

I was reading this thinking about the biggie song, "Gimme the Loot, Gimme the loot, I'm a bad man.." LOL

Knowing me, I would probably have kept my mouth shut but I would probably say something only because I know they're going to get the money back one way or another. I don't want my future checks to end up short b/c I chose to be greedy. Besides I don't want to be known as the untrusty Negro *lol*

T, You know how I feel about some of my co-workers...lol. I would burn a hole in the carpet running to the office to snitch but at the same time I know how most of them operate and they operate dirty as hell. They would try to bring me down talking about how "I knew" and didn't say anything possibily getting me in trouble as well in the process. I would say it depends though...it could come back to bite you and you become the "office snitch". I would let him know that I know and push come to shove you will report it but you expect him to do it before you do.

Ain't nothing free!

I would have spoken up as soon as I noticed the mistake in my check. I'd rather bring it to my boss's attention than have them bring it to my attention. I wouldn't snitch on the co-worker either.

I would have saved the extra dough in an interest bearing account so that when they ask me to return it (or stop my next three paychecks) I will have the dough. I wouldnt snitch unless the mistake effected me and my reputation. Then I would suggest my supervisor look into the co-worker who messed up.

I wouldn't say anything because I probably wouldn't even notice. I'm just looney like that.

I remember once, me and 2 of my collegues decided to rip off accounting by taking the change from each transaction and putting that money into an account. We figured that that we'd make a couple thousand dollars, but somehow we collected over $300,000, so we had to figure out a way to ...wait that was Office Space.
